Kriya Yoga Philosophy, Tradition, and Practice

kriya: Sanskrit, intentional or spontaneous “action” that contributes to overall well-being and authentic spiritual growth.

yoga: 1. “Bringing together” attention and awareness with one’s essence of being.
2. Practices used for this purpose.

tradition: Cultural characteristics or information transmitted from one generation to another, usually by oral communication.

In the kriya yoga tradition as represented by Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Sri Yukteswar, Paramahansa Yogananda, and their successors throughout the world, holistic lifestyle regimens and unique meditation techniques and routines are taught.

The practices, which include the most useful methods of classical Yoga systems, was said by Paramahansa Yogananda to be the most effective way to nurture spiritual growth.

In Patanjali’s yoga-sutras, kriya yoga is defined as self-disciplined thinking and behaviors; profound study of higher realities; and surrender or transcendence of the illusional (mistaken) sense of self that allows Self- and God-realization to occur.

Kriya yoga practices are suitable for everyone. Authentic religious traditions and spiritual teachings are respected. The innate, divine nature of every person is honored.

Roy Eugene Davis, ordained by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1951, has taught spiritual growth processes for more than five decades in North and South America, Europe, West Africa, and India. The founder and director of Center for Spiritual Awareness, his books have been published in ten languages and in eleven countries.
